In late October 2026, Italy underwent a renewal process for the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura (CSM), the body responsible for the self-governance of the Italian judiciary. Over 9,000 magistrates participated in elections to select 20 members for the 2027–2031 term. This voting process followed a constitutional referendum that rejected a justice reform proposal which would have introduced a lottery system for certain council members.

The election results indicate a shift in the council’s political center of gravity toward the center-left. Progressive judicial groups, including Area Dg, Unicost, and the Autogoverno Diffuso-Magistratura Democratica network, secured a combined majority of seats. Conversely, the Magistratura Indipendente group experienced a significant decline, dropping from seven seats in the previous term to four. Among the elected members is Cosimo Ferri, a former leader of Magistratura Indipendente and former undersecretary of justice, who ran as an independent candidate.

The election of the 20 magistrate members concluded with a high voter turnout of approximately 90 percent. While the judicial members have been proclaimed, the renewal of the CSM remains incomplete. Parliament must still elect the ten lay members, a process expected to be complex due to ongoing political disagreements between the government majority and the opposition. Previous legal determinations by the Supreme Court of Cassation regarding electoral law interpretation had already facilitated the election of Filippo Di Todaro of Unicost, who secured his seat through the proportional quota.
