In Trieste, ceremonies mark the anniversary of the city’s return to Italian administration in 1954. Following the withdrawal of Anglo-American troops and a Memorandum of Understanding in London, power was transferred to General Edmondo De Renzi. Commemorative events in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia include military detachments and the Air Force Band. Recent observances of the 72nd anniversary in Trieste featured formal flag-raising and lowering ceremonies at the Pili. The rites included the Air Force Fanfare and the City of Trieste banner, which is decorated with the Gold Medal for Military Valor. Local authorities, including Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Regional Councilor Pierpaolo Roberti, participated in the events. Roberti noted the date’s significance in “defining Italy’s post-war borders and completing the national territory.” Other observed events include the 166th anniversary of Italian Unification in Vairano Patenora, honoring the meeting between King Vittorio Emanuele II and General Giuseppe Garibaldi. Additionally, the date marks the 1944 establishment of RAI (Radio Audizioni Italiane) after the fall of the fascist regime, the birth of poet Carlo Alberto Salustri, and the religious commemoration of San Folco Scotti. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: Historical anniversaries mark October 26 in Italy October 26 marks the anniversary of Trieste's return to Italy in 1954, the founding of RAI in 1944, and the birth of poet Trilussa. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/historical-anniversaries-mark-october-26-in-italy ### 2026-10-25: Trieste commemorates 72nd anniversary of return to Italy Trieste marked the 72nd anniversary of its return to Italy with military ceremonies and flag-raising rites, honoring the 1954 transition from Allied administration to the Italian Republic. 9 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/italy-commemorates-historical-anniversaries-in-trieste-and-vairano-patenora --- Cite as: Italian historical commemorations in October.
