In early October, unions in Benevento raised concerns regarding the SAMTE S. r. l. plant and the Casalduni site, noting that promised construction on a biodigester had failed to commence despite regional funding. Additionally, unions reported a social emergency involving the Saxa Group, where delays in activating wage guarantee funds left hundreds of families without financial support. By mid-October, the focus expanded to Sicily, where CGIL Sicilia proposed regional measures to combat inflation and energy emergencies. These proposals include creating a permanent fund for low-income households and increasing taxes on the petroleum sector to fund essential services. Concurrently, unions in Sicily reported that financial instability at the transport company Ast has led to severe salary delays for agency workers and threats of contract termination by the Attal Group, potentially disrupting regional transport services. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: Sicilian unions demand action on cost of living and wage delays Sicilian unions are demanding regional government action to combat the rising cost of living and addressing critical wage delays for transport workers at Ast. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sicilian-unions-demand-action-on-cost-of-living-and-wage-delays ### 2026-10-09: Italian unions call for urgent intervention regarding worker welfare Italian unions are demanding urgent institutional action to resolve job insecurity at SAMTE S. r. l. and financial distress for Saxa Group workers due to bureaucratic delays. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/italian-unions-call-for-urgent-intervention-regarding-worker-welfare --- Cite as: Italian labor unions protesting economic instability.
