Elections for the renewal of the Comitato degli Italiani all’Estero (Comites) are scheduled for December 4, 2026. These committees represent Italian citizens living abroad within consular districts. For the Fiume constituency, the new committee will consist of 12 members, with voter registration required by November 4, 2026. In San Marino, the new Comites will also consist of 12 members serving five-year terms, with candidate lists due by October 3, 2026.

In late September 2026, the Presidency Committee of the General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE) met at the Farnesina in Rome to engage in institutional discussions with the Italian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The committee focused on analyzing the electoral machinery to ensure participation and addressing proposed reforms to the electoral law for the Overseas Constituency. Other agenda items included citizenship laws, the digitalization of consular services, and the protection of citizens in conflict zones, natural disaster areas, or prison systems.

However, the upcoming elections have sparked debate due to logistical hurdles regarding candidate requirements. To run in the elections, lists must collect between 100 and 200 signatures, which must then be authenticated by the relevant Italian consulate. Reports from the United States, Europe, and Latin America indicate dissatisfaction with this procedure. Challenges include long distances to consular offices and incompatible working hours. Ornella Fado, Vice President of the COM. IT. ES. of New York, noted that the process is perceived as “inadequate for the diverse geographic realities of citizens residing abroad,” citing concerns from communities in areas such as Rochester and Bermuda.
