Following extreme weather events and cyclones Harry and Oriana in early 2026, Italian regions have begun allocating funds for damage recovery and infrastructure restoration.

In Sardinia, 11 million euros were allocated to support the restoration of territories, including 10 million euros for municipalities to repair public assets and 1 million euros for large industrial areas. Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi emphasized the importance of restoring ordinary conditions to infrastructure.

In Calabria, a reconstruction plan has been finalized to address damage from Cyclone Harry. Over 49 million euros have been allocated for the first year of recovery as part of a broader 200 million euro allocation distributed among Calabria, Sardinia, and Sicily. The Calabrian plan includes 65 specific interventions, such as repairing promenades, coastal defense, and road connectivity. Amidst these recovery efforts, Calabria has also seen a 7.3% increase in tourism arrivals, with Tropea approaching 600,000 annual visitors, though officials warn of rising real estate costs.

Sicily continues to face weather risks, with alerts for intense thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail in the Ragusa and Syracuse areas. In Siracusa, these weather concerns are compounded by logistical challenges for the school system, including aging buildings and potential double shifts due to ongoing maintenance and seismic safety works. These issues occur against a backdrop of a broader demographic decline, with experts noting Italy has lost nearly 434,000 students over the last five years.
