The 2026 Ecosistema Urbano report, produced by Legambiente and Ambiente Italia, evaluates the environmental performance of 106 Italian provincial capitals across indicators such as air, water, waste, mobility, urban environment, and energy. The findings reveal a divided landscape. Mantova, Trento, and Bolzano lead the rankings, with small to medium-sized cities in the North-East showing strong ecological transitions. In contrast, large metropolitan areas and southern cities face significant challenges. While Cosenza emerged as a leader in southern Italy, cities such as Naples, Catania, and Palermo rank near the bottom due to issues with waste management, water loss, and air quality. Specific localized concerns were noted in Palermo, which fell to the third-to-last position due to traffic congestion, high pollutant emissions, and a lack of green spaces. Additionally, Alessandria ranked 100th out of 106 cities, performing poorly in soil consumption and land use, which local groups suggest threatens biodiversity and hydrogeological safety. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-28: Italian cities rank low in 2026 Urban Ecosystem report The 2026 Urban Ecosystem report shows Palermo and Alessandria ranking near the bottom of Italy's most sustainable cities due to pollution, traffic, and high soil consumption. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/italian-cities-rank-low-in-2026-urban-ecosystem-report ### 2026-10-26: Legambiente Ecosistema Urbano 2026: Mantova leads Italian sustainability rankings The 2026 Ecosistema Urbano report ranks Mantova as Italy's most sustainable city, highlighting a performance gap between northern and southern regions. 68 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/miramare-inaugurates-new-basketball-court-at-parco-spina-verde --- Cite as: Italian urban environmental sustainability rankings.
