Trenitalia, in partnership with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, has initiated test runs of Frecciarossa high-speed trains in Germany and Austria. These trials are part of an international certification process to establish direct rail links between Italy and Germany.

Technical challenges involving differing national requirements for magnetic track brakes, as well as varying electricity and signaling systems, have impacted the original launch schedule. The trains are currently undergoing approximately 300 days of testing, including high-speed trials of up to 300 km/h.

Regular passenger service for direct connections between Munich, Milan, and Rome is expected to begin in summer 2027. Initial plans include four daily connections, such as Milan-Munich and Rome-Munich routes. By December 2028, the service aims to expand to ten daily connections and potentially extend routes to include Berlin and Naples.
