Following a bilateral agreement between Italy and Switzerland regarding the taxation of cross-border workers, Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti signed a decree to establish state contributions for border municipalities. This measure utilizes the Fund for the Economic Development of Border Territories to provide approximately 90 million euros annually to municipalities within 20 kilometers of the Swiss borders of the Cantons of Ticino, Graubünden, and Valais. This replaces the 1974 “ristorni” system with a modern state-funded structure.

Subsequently, the Italian government increased the allocated fund from 89 million to 108 million euros. This increase is intended to support infrastructure and services in territories managing cross-border movement. The expanded funding will also incorporate resources from extra revenue generated by new cross-border workers to strengthen the economic conditions of these regions.
