KAI Commuter implemented temporary schedule adjustments to the Jabodetabek Commuter Line starting September 7, 2026, to facilitate intensive maintenance of KRL train sets in collaboration with PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero). Following capacity shortages on the Bogor Red Line, service patterns were adjusted on September 10, 2026, adding 13 trips back to the Bogor line. By September 21, 2026, KAI Commuter increased frequency on the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route by adding four additional round-trip services after the completion of a ‘General Check Up’ for CLI-225 series trainsets.

On September 25, 2026, KAI Commuter announced plans to significantly reduce headways on the Green Line (Rangkasbitung route) to manage a massive passenger surge. Current waiting times of 10 to 15 minutes are targeted to drop to 4 to 5 minutes to address overcrowding caused by residential growth along the Tanah Abang to Rangkasbitung corridor. The Green Line currently averages 245,085 daily passengers, with peak occupancy reaching approximately 161 percent, surpassing the Bogor and Bekasi/Cikarang routes. Total passenger numbers for the service are projected to reach 77.5 million in 2025.

To address rising passenger volumes and aging infrastructure, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has received approval from Commission VI of the DPR RI to import 23 used electric multiple unit (KRL) trainsets from Japan. This includes seven 12-car formation (SF12) and 16 8-car formation (SF8) sets. Additionally, PT INKA is processing an order for 16 new KRL trainsets for KAI Commuter.

Looking toward long-term optimization, KAI is targeting a formal integration (inbreng) with PT INKA by January 2027. KAI also plans to extend Jabodetabek KRL routes to Cikampek and Cigombong by 2028 and is investing Rp1.1 trillion to install automatic portals at 1,404 level crossings by 2027.
