Jacob Fatu was written off WWE television following a storyline hit and run angle during a brawl between The Bloodline and 946 on Monday Night Raw. This segment was intended to explain his absence from upcoming programming, such as the Money in the Bank event.

Reports suggested the absence might be due to Fatu filming a separate WWE production. By November, reports indicated that Fatu was nearing a return to television ahead of the Survivor Series: WarGames event. Speculation arose that he might join Roman Reigns, Solo Sikoa, and The Usos in a five on five match against the 946 group.
