James Bedford, an American psychology professor, became the first human to undergo cryopreservation following his death from terminal cancer on January 12, 1967. His body was preserved at approximately -196 degrees Celsius using ice, chemical agents, and liquid nitrogen, with the goal of utilizing future medical advancements to restore his life.

Bedford’s remains are stored in an aluminum pod at the Alcor Life Extensions Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona. While a 1991 inspection noted skin changes and traces of ice, the exact condition of his internal organs and brain is unknown.

As cryonics technology has evolved to include methods like vitrification—a process designed to prevent ice crystal formation by creating a glass-like structure—the fundamental scientific question of whether future technology can successfully revive a cryopreserved human remains unproven.
