Reports initially indicated that James Cameron is working on a new installment in the Terminator film franchise. Early reports suggested that Arnold Schwarzenegger would not participate in the upcoming production, following the 2019 release of Terminator: Dark Fate.

James Cameron later confirmed he is preparing a new script for the series once his Avatar commitments are finished. He noted that the seventh film will not feature Schwarzenegger, as the previous film served as a conclusion to that actor's role as the T-800. Cameron expressed an intention to explore broader themes, such as super intelligence and time wars, to address narrative challenges in a modern context.
