The Giancarlo and Danna Olgiati Collection at LAC Lugano is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Jannis Kounellis: Io sono un pittore’ (I am a painter), which is scheduled to run until January 2027.

Curated by Vincenzo de Bellis, the exhibition features over 35 works created between the late 1950s and 2016. The project seeks to reframe the legacy of Jannis Kounellis (1936–2017) by presenting painting as his primary interpretive lens. This approach offers an alternative to his established reputation as a master of installation or a leader of the Arte Povera movement.

The exhibition interprets Kounellis’s assertion, ‘Io sono un pittore,’ as a posture toward reality rather than a specific technique. The display explores how the artist ‘painted’ using diverse materials—including iron, coal, fire, jute sacks, and coffee—as well as through the use of space, silence, and memory.
