In late July 2026 Japan accelerated its artificial‑intelligence push on two fronts. KDDI Corp. and Google’s AI Futures Fund announced a startup support programme that offers funding, early access to Google DeepMind models such as Gemini, GPU‑cloud trials and implementation expertise for domestic AI firms. At the same time the Japanese government allocated roughly ¥3.9 trillion for Noetra’s construction of the country’s largest AI data centre, backed by SoftBank, Sony, Honda and NEC, with plans to install about 380 Nvidia server racks from April 2027.

Concurrently, the Digital Agency rolled out an emergency generative‑AI platform, “Government AI Genai,” to municipalities hit by the Reiwa‑8 Kumamoto earthquake. The service provides chat‑based tools for drafting notices, summarising documents, fact‑finding, translation and data conversion, operating for about three weeks without storing data. In parallel, Ogata City in Fukuoka launched its own AI efficiency programme, “自治体AI zevo,” allowing staff to use models like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on a secure network, expanding active users from 86 in January to 181 by June 2026. Together, these initiatives illustrate Japan’s broader strategy of building a robust AI infrastructure while deploying generative‑AI tools for public‑sector operations.
