Japan continues to implement digital and community-based health initiatives to support its aging population. Following the deployment of digital monitoring services in early September, such as the ‘Cocowa Touch’ service in Nishinomiya and the ‘GOOSE’ app in Honbetsu, the focus has shifted toward incentive-based wellness and dementia awareness.

In mid-September, municipalities expanded programs that reward physical and mental activity. Sagae City in Yamagata Prefecture utilizes the ‘Sagae No-che!’ app to reward residents aged 65 and older with points for walking and brain training, which are exchangeable for local gift certificates. Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture expanded its ‘Ninarupo’ program to include residents aged 40 and older, rewarding health checkups and community participation with points that can be exchanged for gift certificates or PayPay points.

Newer initiatives include Koshigaya City in Saitama Prefecture, which launched the ‘Kira-po’ program. This allows residents aged 65 and older to earn PayPay points through walking, brain training, and local volunteer activities. To coincide with dementia awareness month in September, Koshigaya City also introduced information sessions and virtual reality experiences to help citizens understand the lived experiences of those with dementia. These programs collectively aim to foster social connections and provide support networks for individuals living with dementia and their families.
