Japan is experiencing a significant tourism boom, with international visitor numbers reaching a record 42 million in 2025. This figure represents more than a doubling of arrivals compared to 2015, when the country saw nearly 20 million visitors.

Key drivers for this surge include the country’s cultural appeal—specifically its food, arts, and spiritual traditions—and a weak yen that has increased affordability for travelers. Osaka has emerged as a major destination for food, fashion, and pop culture.

The Japanese government has established a target to attract 60 million international visitors by 2030. During the 2025-26 period, Australians contributed significantly to these numbers, accounting for nearly one million trips to the country.
