Discussions regarding the amendment of Japan’s Imperial House Law have emerged from both the Imperial Family and political leadership. 

Prince Akishino expressed personal reflection on the recently amended legislation, which allows female members to retain status after marriage and permits the adoption of male descendants from former branches. He noted that he agrees with Emperor Naruhito regarding the necessity of public understanding, while Princess Kiko stated she sees no distinction between men and women in fulfilling imperial duties.

Following his resignation, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also called for further amendments to the law. Ishiba suggested that existing regulations concerning female succession may conflict with the constitutional principle that the Emperor’s position is based on the will of the people.
