Japanese beverage producers are launching various regional initiatives to revitalize local agriculture and preserve traditional brewing cultures.

In Fukushima, Daishichi Shuzo has spent four years working to protect the Nishitani Rice Terraces in Nihonmatsu City. The brewery is producing ‘Daishichi Kimoto Special Junmai Sake Nishitani Tanada’ using Yamada Nishiki rice grown in these terraces to help maintain the scenic landscape. Similarly, in Kumamoto, Ginza Onodera has partnered with several local breweries, including Chiyonoen Shuzo, Matsushita Brewing, and Amakusa Shuzo, for an ‘Original Sake Production Project’ focused on cultivating specific raw materials like sweet potatoes and Yamada Nishiki rice.

In the Tohoku region, Akura Beer has joined the ‘Tohoku Fresh Hop Project,’ a collaboration involving 18 breweries to use ‘IBUKI’ hops harvested in Iwate Prefecture. Additionally, in Shiga Prefecture, Nagahama Roman Beer is working to revive Wakasa Beer, Fukui Prefecture’s first local craft beer, following the bankruptcy of its former manufacturer in August 2025.
