Surveys conducted by Nifty Kids and the Hakuhodo Education Foundation Children’s Research Institute highlight a disconnect between the interest levels and actual reading time of Japanese elementary and junior high school students.

While a high percentage of students report liking reading—with Nifty Kids reporting 89.4% of respondents ‘love’ or ‘like’ it—actual engagement varies. Data indicates that approximately 72.6% of students spend less than one hour per week reading, and 17.4% report not reading at all.

Generational differences are evident in reading frequency and book selection. Elementary students tend to read more frequently, often 16 or more books per month, whereas junior high students typically read only 2 to 3 books per month. Furthermore, junior high students are increasingly influenced by digital platforms, with 33.5% using social media or YouTube to select books, a rate higher than those following recommendations from friends or family.

A primary factor cited for low engagement is the competition from digital entertainment; many students find that ‘games, YouTube, and other things are more fun’ or report feeling fatigued by reading text.
