German science journalist and television pioneer Jean Pütz celebrated his 90th birthday on September 21 in Mettmann. Pütz is widely recognized for his work with WDR, specifically for hosting the program ‘Hobbythek’ from 1974 to 2004, which aimed to make complex scientific and technical topics accessible to a broad audience through practical experiments.

Prior to his media career, Pütz trained as an electrician and earned a degree in communications technology in 1959. While he has faced health challenges, including vision issues and a previous hip fracture, he maintains an active lifestyle. He uses a recumbent tricycle for local travel and frequently journeys to visit family in Strasbourg and Apulia.

His recent birthday celebration highlighted his family life, specifically the presence of his 15-year-old daughter, Julie. Despite their 75-year age difference, Pütz remains actively involved in her life, supporting her equestrian career. Julie, a district champion in Essen, describes her father as a “curious and unique individual” who shares engaging life stories.
