Former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted at Newry Crown Court for 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, involving two women between 1985 and 2008. During the trial of facts, it was found that his wife, Eleanor Donaldson, aided and abetted the offences, though she is being dealt with under a Mental Health Order due to her condition.

Donaldson, currently held at Maghaberry Prison, is awaiting sentencing. During a pre-sentence hearing, legal representatives argued that the convictions “obliterate” his political achievements. Prosecution barrister Rosemary Walsh KC highlighted aggravating factors, including the age disparity between Donaldson and his victims—who were of primary school age at the time—and the long-term impact of the abuse. The two victims attended the hearing in the public gallery.

Judge Paul Ramsey has indicated that a “lengthy custodial sentence is inevitable,” with the sentencing scheduled for next month. Donaldson’s legal team has expressed intent to appeal. 

Following the conviction, the Northern Ireland Assembly conducted a review to determine if there was any evidence of further misconduct involving staff or users of Parliament Buildings. The review concluded that no relevant information or reports were identified through Assembly Commission records or dedicated reporting channels, though officials noted these findings are “necessarily limited.”
