In a subsequent game against Illinois, Smith became the first player in Ohio State history to reach 3,000 career receiving yards. During that performance, he recorded three receiving touchdowns, moving into second place on the program’s career touchdown list.

In a later matchup against Illinois, where the Buckeyes won 42-19, Smith delivered a historic performance by recording 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns. This performance allowed him to tie the program record for the most receiving touchdowns in a single game. During this same game, quarterback Julian Sayin completed 27 of 36 passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns, all of which were caught by Smith.

With 34 career scores following the Illinois game, Smith is now only one touchdown behind Chris Olave on the program’s all-time receiving touchdowns list.
