Following the appointment of German manager Thomas Reis at Trabzonspor, the club began restructuring its technical staff. Initial reports indicated that former German national team player Jerome Boateng traveled to Trabzon for face-to-face meetings to discuss a potential role as an assistant coach. While no final agreement was reached during those initial discussions, Boateng subsequently departed the city.

By late September, reports emerged that Boateng had reached a “principle agreement” to join the coaching staff. The 38-year-old former World Cup winner is expected to begin his professional coaching career as an assistant to Reis, who reportedly requested Boateng’s inclusion following a 4-0 victory over Galatasaray. Boateng previously gained coaching experience with the amateur side of LASK in Austria.

By September 26, Boateng arrived in Trabzon to officially begin his coaching career. Having reached an agreement to serve as an assistant to Thomas Reis, the former defender is expected to use his international experience to assist with player development and communication, specifically regarding the club’s foreign players. He has already begun familiarizing himself with the city and the club’s daily training routines.

On September 29, the transition into his coaching role sparked discussion on the podcast ‘Safran und Sauerkraut, ehrlich ehrenlos’. Hosts Noah and Julian expressed surprise at the appointment, noting Boateng’s shift from player to coach. The discussion addressed various motivations for the move, including potential financial factors and the possibility that Trabzonspor is seeking the publicity associated with a high-profile name. The hosts also noted the lack of ‘cancel culture’ within the football industry regarding Boateng’s public history.
