The Pittsburgh Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2028 second-round draft pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. The move followed a contract stalemate in which Porter, entering the final year of his rookie deal, reportedly sought an extension of approximately $30 million per season. During negotiations, Porter expressed feeling “disrespected” and “undervalued” by the Steelers.

For Dallas, the acquisition aims to bolster a secondary impacted by injuries. Porter’s availability has been inconsistent due to health issues. He was ruled out for the Cowboys’ Thursday Night Football matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a severe stomach illness, which he described as being unable to keep food down. This followed an earlier ankle injury listing, though he had been a full participant in practice prior to the illness.

Heading into the Week 6 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, Porter is listed as questionable due to an ankle injury, having been limited in practice on Wednesday and Friday.

The trade leaves the Steelers with a depleted secondary. Following a 27-24 loss to Cleveland, analysts have suggested the team may look toward the 2027 NFL Draft to rebuild depth, specifically noting Clemson cornerback Ashton Hampton as a potential high-value target. Former Steelers player Breiden Fehoko has criticized the Rooney family and Steelers ownership, citing a traditional approach to negotiations and a reluctance to offer guaranteed money as factors in Porter’s departure.
