Aris FC initially reached an agreement to sign Rangers captain and Scottish international defender John Souttar on a three-year contract. The transfer was intended to bolster the Greek side’s defense with the experienced center-back, who was expected to travel to Thessaloniki for medical examinations.

However, the move subsequently faced complications due to a financial dispute regarding the payment of the final year of Souttar’s contract at Rangers. While Aris Thessaloniki attempted to finalize the deal before the Greek transfer deadline, the unresolved contractual issues stalled the process. Rangers management indicated that if the transfer failed, they would honor the existing contract and reintegrate the defender into the senior squad.

The transfer has since collapsed following the closure of the Greek transfer window. The negotiations failed specifically due to a dispute regarding an outstanding £430,000 contract value. Consequently, Souttar remains at Ibrox.

The situation presents a dilemma for Rangers manager Derek McInnes, as Souttar had previously been considered surplus to requirements and was excluded from the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain. Fan sentiment regarding his reintegration is divided; while a majority of supporters surveyed on TalkingPoints believe he should be brought back into the first team to address defensive depth, others have called for him to remain frozen out or for the club to terminate his contract entirely.
