Mexican writer Juan Villoro was awarded the 2026 Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language. The award, presented by Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), recognized Villoro’s diverse body of work in fiction, theater, essays, and journalism.

During the award ceremony held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Villoro delivered an acceptance speech titled ‘El espejo de obsidiana’. In his remarks, he reflected on the influence of Carlos Fuentes, noting that while it is impossible to imitate him, Fuentes’ voice invites new responses. Villoro expressed gratitude to Silvia Lemus, the widow of Carlos Fuentes, for her role in preserving the late author’s memory. He also noted shared dialogues with Fuentes regarding Mexico City, revolutionary movements, and the condition of marginalized populations.

Addressing contemporary social and political issues, Villoro argued that progressive governments must foster conditions for criticism to flourish. He called for greater public investment in culture, science, education, and health to combat social inequality, violence, and organized crime.
