In September 2026, Jude Bellingham was involved in a heated confrontation with Atletico Madrid defender Cristian Romero during a Madrid derby. Following a VAR-reviewed incident, Bellingham reportedly called Romero a “coward” and made references to Lionel Messi, while Romero allegedly called Bellingham a “crybaby.” The RFEF Disciplinary Commission later issued sanctions to several players, including Bellingham and Romero, for dangerous play.

By October 2026, reports indicated that Bellingham had impressed manager Jose Mourinho through his professionalism and work ethic at the Valdebebas training complex. Following a period of returning to form, Bellingham is expected to sign a contract extension that would keep him at Real Madrid until 2031.
