Kalamata has focused on technological innovation and digital integration to enhance its urban infrastructure and economic appeal. In early September 2026, the city was named ‘Smart Town of the Year’ for the second consecutive year, receiving five gold awards for projects including the ‘Kalamata Digital Twin’, smart mobility initiatives, and digital water management systems.

Building on this technological foundation, the municipality has expanded its efforts toward economic development by targeting the remote work sector. During the Athens Nomad Fest 2026, Kalamata officials promoted the city as a destination for digital nomads, aiming to attract international entrepreneurs and technology professionals as potential long-term residents.
