The Sanctuary of the Passion of Christ and the Virgin Mary in Kalwaria Pacławska, Poland, scheduled the Wielki Odpust Kalwaryjski pilgrimage for August 9–16. The event, featuring liturgical celebrations and processions, was set to include a jubilee honoring the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

By August 12, large groups of pilgrims had begun arriving for the festivities. This included many Poles residing in Ukraine who crossed the border at Medyka.
