In September 2026, several Kansas-based collegiate volleyball teams competed in significant matchups. The No. 22 Kansas Jayhawks opened the Jayhawk Classic with a 3-0 victory over Ole Miss, winning sets 25-19, 25-22, and 25-13.

During the same period, the Kansas State Wildcats achieved an upset against No. 20 Creighton, winning 3-1 to improve their season record to 7-0. Following these performances, the two programs met in October for the Dillons Sunflower Showdown.
