Actor Kazuki Sawamura is set to lead two major Japanese television dramas in October 2026.

In the TV Tokyo series ‘Borders: Metropolitan Police Department Special Incident Countermeasures Unit’, scheduled to premiere on October 16, Sawamura stars in his first lead role for the network in approximately nine years. Based on a novel by Shunichi Doba, the series follows a specialized task force (SCU) that handles complex crimes like cybercrime and international drug trafficking. The production features veteran actor Tsuyoshi Naito, who portrays the Superintendent General, Takumi Ogata. Musician Kazuya Yoshii is set to perform the theme song, ‘MUJO’.

During a press conference for ‘Borders’, Sawamura addressed a cast change resulting from an injury to actor Hidekazu Majima. Majima sustained a fracture to the left fibular head during action filming and will depart the series after the fourth episode. Shunsuke Nakamura will take over the role of Ryosuke Wataya starting from episode five. Sawamura noted that he and Nakamura share a long-standing relationship from their time as models and expressed gratitude for Nakamura’s ability to “lighten the atmosphere on set”.

Additionally, Sawamura will reprise his role as hospital director Masato Ochiai in the Fuji TV medical drama ‘Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji’ (ER 24 Hours), starting October 12. This appearance marks his return to the long-running series 27 years after his initial role in the first series, alongside returning actors Yosuke Eguchi and Nanako Matsushima.
