Developments: 2. Mesut Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has raised concerns regarding the security landscape in Iraq and the relationship between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government in Baghdad. Initially, Barzani issued a warning to the Iraqi government, stating that his party’s participation in the government would be meaningless if agreements made with the Shiite Coordination Framework are not implemented. He expressed concern over conspiracies against the KDP and highlighted security vulnerabilities, suggesting that a withdrawal of coalition forces could lead to a resurgence of ISIS similar to the 2014 incursion. Following these warnings, Barzani addressed the potential conclusion of missions by the US-led international coalition. He emphasized that the KRG maintains coordination with the Iraqi federal government to mitigate threats and asserted that Peshmerga forces remain ready to defend KRG territory. He recommended that both the Iraqi government and the KRG pursue bilateral agreements with coalition countries to ensure continued regional stability. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Mesut Barzani addresses KRG security and Iraqi coordination KDP leader Mesut Barzani affirmed that the Kurdistan Regional Government is coordinating closely with the Iraqi federal government to manage security risks following the potential withdrawal of coalition forces 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mesut-barzani-addresses-krg-security-and-iraqi-coordination ### 2026-09-27: Mesud Barzani warns Baghdad over agreement compliance and security Mesud Barzani warned that if Baghdad fails to honor agreements, the KDP's participation in the Iraqi government is meaningless, citing fears of a repeat of the 2014 ISIS incursion. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mesud-barzani-warns-baghdad-over-agreement-compliance-and-security --- Cite as: KDP-Iraq security and political tensions.
