Developments: 2. A public debate has emerged in Kenya regarding the use of gendered public washrooms by cross-dressers and individuals with diverse gender identities. The controversy began after hair and makeup artist John Mokuna Mungai, known as Jony the Hairdresser, defended his use of women’s washrooms, stating that his feminine appearance and voice lead others to perceive him as a woman. As the discussion intensified, Jony suggested in a subsequent video that transgender and intersex individuals should use portable toilets or diapers, claiming that women do not want them in women’s bathrooms. This sparked conflicting reactions on social media. Some advocates, such as TikToker Rakel Kenya, have called for government intervention to create a third category of public toilet facilities to accommodate different gender identities while addressing privacy and safety concerns for women and children. Conversely, others have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such measures, noting that Kenya remains a conservative society where many women continue to voice concerns regarding privacy and safety in female-designated spaces. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-26: Kenya debates restroom access for cross-dressers Controversial comments by Kenyan cross-dresser Jony the Hairdresser have ignited a national debate over gender identity and the necessity of separate public restroom facilities. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kenya-debates-restroom-access-for-cross-dressers ### 2026-10-24: Kenya cross-dressers spark debate over public washroom use Kenyan cross-dressers Jony the Hairdresser and Kelvin Kinuthia have sparked a national debate over the use of women's public washrooms, leading to calls for government intervention and new facility categories. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kenya-cross-dressers-spark-debate-over-public-washroom-use --- Cite as: Kenya public restroom access debate.
