On August 2, gunmen armed with AK-47s attacked St. Joseph Catholic Church in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. During the morning Mass, the attackers abducted a seminarian, a catechist, and a worshipper. While the catechist was released shortly after, the seminarian and another victim remained missing following the raid.

By August 9, security agencies—including the Nigerian Army, the Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS)—conducted a joint operation that resulted in the release of the kidnapped victims, identified as seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi. During the operation, authorities arrested three suspects and killed one suspected kidnapper in a gun battle. Officials recovered four AK-47 rifles and ammunition at the scene. The arrested suspects were identified by the victims as their abductors.
