The North Korean-linked hacking group Kimsuky is integrating artificial intelligence into its cyber espionage operations to enhance the effectiveness of its attacks. According to reports from the Genians Security Center, the group has moved away from using public chatbots to avoid alerting cloud-based monitoring services. Instead, they have established private, offline environments using local large language model (LLM) frameworks such as Ollama, GPT4All, and Msty.

By utilizing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology, Kimsuky can efficiently search and analyze large volumes of stolen documents on its own servers. Researchers identified the use of AI agent development frameworks, speech-to-text software, and the Cursor AI coding assistant within the group’s infrastructure.

Evidence from server leaks, which allowed for the reconstruction of operator keystrokes, revealed North Korean-specific spelling and vocabulary. These logs showed the group using AI to check stolen data for passwords, Gmail credentials, and cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases. Since early 2026, Kimsuky has reportedly used generative AI to create highly convincing, AI-driven decoy documents for spear-phishing campaigns targeting the diplomatic, military, financial, virtual asset, and game development sectors.
