King Charles III and Queen Camilla traveled to Cardiff for the ceremonial opening of the seventh Senedd, marking the first time the King has performed this duty as monarch. During the event, the royal couple encountered anti-monarchy protesters outside the Welsh Parliament who used slogans such as ‘Down with the Crown’ and ‘Not My King.’

In his address, the King emphasized unifying elements of Wales, including its language, culture, and landscape. The ceremony also included a tribute to the victims of the 1966 Aberfan coal-tip disaster on its 60th anniversary, during which the King met with survivors and descendants of rescue workers. The occasion was also marked by the exclusion of the National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa, who stated her poem was deemed too political due to themes regarding Gaza and trans healthcare.
