Sources: 6. Developments: 2. The city of Košice is undergoing political and administrative shifts ahead of its municipal elections. An amendment to the Košice City Act proposes a restructuring of the city’s 22 municipal districts. A potential new model could limit the city to a maximum of ten districts, provided each contains at least 5,000 residents, subject to a public referendum. If no agreement is reached by March 31, 2027, the number of districts is scheduled to automatically reduce to four by 2030. Regarding the mayoral race, polling indicates a highly competitive contest. Incumbent Jaroslav Polaček holds a narrow lead with 21.9% support, followed by Ladislav Lörinc at 20.3%. Polaček has officially announced his candidacy for re-election, backed by a coalition including KDH, SaS, the Hungarian Alliance, the Roma Coalition Party, Nova, and the Democratic Party – Civic Democrats of Slovakia. His campaign emphasizes the completion of urban projects and infrastructure modernization, specifically targeting roads, bridges, sidewalks, and public transit systems. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-18: Jaroslav Polaček announces candidacy for Košice mayor Current Košice mayor Jaroslav Polaček has announced his candidacy for the 2026 municipal elections, focusing on completing ongoing infrastructure and transport projects. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/jaroslav-polaek-announces-candidacy-for-koice-mayor ### 2026-10-06: Košice faces district restructuring and tight mayoral race Košice faces potential administrative restructuring of its municipal districts and a tight mayoral race, with incumbent Jaroslav Polaček leading Ladislav Lörinc in recent polling. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/koice-faces-district-restructuring-and-tight-mayoral-race --- Cite as: Košice municipal administration and election developments.
