Kristi Noem has transitioned from her role as the special envoy for the Shield of the Americas to a position as a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. Her tenure as special envoy, which began in March following her replacement as Homeland Security Secretary by Senator Markwayne Mullin on March 5, 2026, was a six-month appointment.

In her new capacity, Noem will continue to manage the Shield of the Americas portfolio, focusing on regional security cooperation, economic coordination, and anti-cartel enforcement across the Western Hemisphere.

Controversy has emerged regarding an unauthorized statement posted by Noem on X on October 16. The post, which addressed rumors that she had fallen out of favor within the administration, reportedly used fabricated State Department letterhead to announce her new role and clarify that her previous appointment was always intended to be a six-month term. State Department officials and sources have confirmed that leadership never authorized the statement and that the letterhead used was not official.
