Initially, the organization highlighted issues regarding air quality and energy management. KTMMOB President Görkem Çelik noted that pollution in Nicosia and surrounding areas is being driven by a fire at the Güngör Solid Waste Landfill, emissions from the Kalecik and Teknecik power plants, and urban construction dust. Additionally, technical reports addressed the use of large-scale battery storage for electricity regulation, warning of fire hazards and the need for lifecycle management to prevent environmental damage. Following these environmental concerns, KTMMOB called for a formal investigation into a workplace accident in Lefkoşa involving a transformer explosion. The incident caused serious injuries to an employee. Çelik demanded accountability for any negligence and emphasized the necessity of occupational health and safety measures, such as regular training, safety inspections, and the provision of personal protective equipment. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Council of Ministers issues decree-laws on student amnesty and social insurance bonuses New decree-laws have been enacted, providing a 40,000 TL bonus to Social Insurance Department recipients and granting university students the right to resume studies if disconnected before November 1, 2026. 10 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ktmmob-demands-investigation-into-lefkoa-transformer-accident ### 2026-09-07: KTMMOB raises concerns over air quality and energy storage in Northern Cyprus KTMMOB officials in Northern Cyprus have highlighted critical issues regarding air pollution from landfills and power plants, alongside technical concerns regarding battery storage safety and energy policy. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ktmmob-raises-concerns-over-air-quality-and-energy-storage-in-northern-cyprus --- Cite as: KTMMOB environmental and safety concerns in Northern Cyprus.
