A strong earthquake (shindo 6-strong) struck Kumamoto, Japan, causing significant industrial and residential damage.

At the Nippon Paper Co. plant in Yatsuo, the collapse of an 80-metre chimney onto a two-storey building resulted in nine deaths—comprising six office workers and three contractors—and seven injuries. Company leadership halted all plant operations to allow for an external expert investigation into the structural failure.

In the aftermath, Yatsushiro City initiated emergency demolition programs funded by public money to dismantle structures posing risks of secondary damage, such as a collapsed warehouse. On August 17, the city began work on four buildings, with plans to expand the program to include houses with partial or significant damage through an application process starting in October. Across Kumamoto Prefecture, approximately 31,644 homes were affected, including 1,449 buildings that were completely destroyed.

Following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 28, 2026, Yatsushiro City also faced a water crisis. While municipal services were expected to be restored by late August, roughly half of the local population relies on well water, much of which was depleted, contaminated, or saw lowered levels due to the tremor.

Local relief efforts have included the vendor Raifuji Shoten, which used donated generators to preserve supplies and provided low-cost meals, such as unagi-meshi, to residents. Additionally, the University of Tokyo’s Disaster Management Training Center has commenced emergency investigations and support activities in the region.
