On October 1, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan successfully launched spacecraft into orbit via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Kyrgyzstan’s first national satellite is designed for Earth observation to monitor agriculture, water resources, glaciers, and natural hazards. Kazakhstan’s contribution, the NIS PocketQube, is an educational project developed by students and engineers to provide telemetry data.

The use of American rocket technology for Kyrgyzstan’s mission has drawn attention to the competitiveness of the Russian aerospace industry. Despite Kyrgyzstan’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the decision to utilize SpaceX services rather than Russian alternatives highlights challenges for Russia, which has faced delays at the Vostochny Cosmodrome.
