Following the Kumamoto earthquake, JR Kyushu announced that the Kyushu Shinkansen is scheduled to resume full operations on September 18. While service will be restored, trains will operate at reduced speeds near Shin-Yatsushiro due to necessary structural reinforcements and safety measures.

To assist with regional mobility during the recovery, Japan Airlines (JAL) is extending temporary flight services between Fukuoka and Kagoshima from September 1 to September 13. This measure aims to compensate for the continued suspension of certain local rail sections and Shinkansen lines. On the Kagoshima Main Line, service between Uto and Yatsushiro is not expected to resume until approximately mid-October. JR Kyushu reported significant earthquake damage, including roughly 600 civil engineering issues, 300 track-related issues, and 100 power-related issues.
