An investigation coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere has targeted illegal labor brokerage, or ‘caporalato’, in the Caserta region of Italy. Authorities identified a scheme where up to 80 laborers, primarily undocumented non-EU nationals, were recruited on streets and transported to vegetable fields in dilapidated vans.

Under this system, workers faced grueling conditions, including 12 to 14-hour shifts seven days a week, often in extreme heat. Compensation was minimal, with hourly wages reported between 3 and 4 euros, or rates as low as 80 cents to 1.50 euros per crate. Daily earnings were capped at 30 euros for new workers and 50 euros for long-term employees.

The two-year investigation, focused on Villa Literno and Mondragone, resulted in eight individuals being investigated. Following the probe, the Carabinieri executed orders requiring three subjects to report to judicial police and one to remain at a specific residence, while four others were notified of the conclusion of preliminary investigations.
