In late August, four laborers died from suspected asphyxiation caused by toxic gases while working on a newly constructed septic tank in the Gopalganj district of Bihar. The victims, all residents of the same village, reportedly lost consciousness after one worker became trapped and three others entered the tank to attempt a rescue. In late September, a similar incident occurred in the South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. Four migrant construction laborers from Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district died after inhaling suspected toxic gases, such as methane or hydrogen sulphide, while working on an underground septic tank at a private residence in Rangdokram village. Preliminary reports indicate two laborers collapsed immediately upon attempting to open the tank’s lid, while two others who rushed to assist also succumbed to the fumes. During the rescue operation, two members of the Fire and Emergency Services lost consciousness due to gas exposure but were later treated and regained consciousness. Investigators believe the deaths resulted from the accumulation of hazardous gases due to inadequate ventilation or the lack of a proper gas outlet.
