The Lake Balaton ecosystem is facing a critical environmental crisis as water levels continue to drop. By late September, the average water level fell to 32 centimeters below the historical baseline, a significant decline from 72 centimeters recorded in early July.

Gábor Vasas, Director of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, has warned that the lake’s ecological stability is at risk due to a prolonged negative water balance where evaporation consistently exceeds replenishment. This hydrological shift is accompanied by rising salinity; mineral and salt concentrations have increased from 450 mg/l fifty years ago to between 620 and 690 mg/l today.

Anthropogenic pressures remain a major concern. Approximately 70% of the shoreline is now built up, which reduces the natural filtration capacity of reed beds. Large-scale construction in riparian zones, such as near the Pogányvölgyi-víz mouth, further diminishes the lake’s ability to recover. 

The lake’s shallow nature, averaging only 3 to 3.5 meters in depth, leads to immediate economic and logistical consequences. Balatoni Hajózási Zrt. has advised tenants to remove sailboats from the water earlier than usual due to rapid silting and the shallowing of harbors. Other ongoing stressors include extreme heatwaves, widespread algae blooms, invasive species, and massive mosquito swarms.
