Lake Macquarie City Council is expanding its citizenship ceremonies to manage a significant increase in new Australian citizens. Following a 169 per cent rise in new citizens over the last two years, the council is moving ceremonies from the Rathmines Theatre to the Belmont 16s auditorium to accommodate larger groups. 

In the 2024-25 financial year, the region saw 372 new citizens, a figure that rose to 850 in 2025-26. The council forecasts that the number will reach 1,000 in 2026-27. The new venue allows for up to 250 conferees and their guests per event, whereas the previous location was limited to approximately 100 conferees.
