Directed by Rob Savage and co-produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Paramount Primal, the film stars Stanfield alongside Ben Mendelsohn. The plot follows a man who discovers a twisted society living in abandoned tunnels beneath New York City. Director Rob Savage has described the film’s tone as being ‘in the vein of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.’ Filming is expected to begin in the United Kingdom in late November or early December, with a scheduled theatrical release on August 27, 2027. Recent developments indicate significant production changes. Ben Wheatley has been appointed as the new director, replacing Rob Savage, who reportedly departed the project due to scheduling conflicts. Additionally, lead actor LaKeith Stanfield has exited the production, necessitating a new casting search. Despite these changes to leadership and casting, the film—written by Nathan Elston—is still intended to follow the original production timeline for its August 27, 2027, release. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-28: Ben Wheatley to direct horror film 'Molepeople Ben Wheatley replaces Rob Savage as director of 'Molepeople', while lead actor LaKeith Stanfield has also departed the project. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ben-wheatley-to-direct-horror-film-molepeople ### 2026-10-12: Lakeith Stanfield to star in horror film ‘Molepeople’ Lakeith Stanfield will star in the upcoming Blumhouse horror film ‘Molepeople,’ directed by Rob Savage, which is set to premiere in theaters on August 27, 2027. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lakeith-stanfield-to-star-in-horror-film-molepeople ### 2026-10-09: LaKeith Stanfield announces horror film ‘Molepeople’ LaKeith Stanfield and Ben Mendelsohn will star in the horror film ‘Molepeople’, set for a theatrical release on August 27, 2027, following an announcement at New York Comic-Con. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lakeith-stanfield-announces-horror-film-molepeople --- Cite as: LaKeith Stanfield horror film ‘Molepeople’ announcement.
