The Landestheater Niederösterreich in St. Pölten has launched a new season under the artistic leadership of Patricia Nickel-Dönicke. The debut production is a collaborative staging of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’, involving eleven different directors.

Nickel-Dönicke, a former citizen of the GDR, highlighted the political relevance of the play, noting that its examination of fascist ideologies and the mechanisms of power resonates with current societal trends in Austria and parts of Germany. The production utilizes stage designs featuring Austrian flags and religious imagery, such as an oversized crucifix, to draw parallels between the historical parable of a criminal’s rise to power and contemporary political contexts.
