Developments: 2. On October 4, 2026, a major fire broke out at the Buku Deru-Deru landfill in West Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia. The blaze, which originated in an empty shack, spread across approximately 15 hectares of the 31.24-hectare facility. Extinguishing efforts were hindered by strong winds and dry waste. The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works deployed water tank trucks to provide 12,000 liters of water, while authorities prepared potential evacuations for nearby residential and tourist areas. On October 26, 2026, a separate major blaze occurred at the Ornamibo landfill in Suriname. Firefighters utilized water cannons and pumped water from the Parakreek to combat the flames. Acting Director Anwar Moenne noted that the fire department was under pressure from simultaneous forest and grass fires in the region. Authorities are investigating the cause, with Moenne noting that arson has not been ruled out because the fire started in an area where spontaneous combustion is unusual. Local officials have called for structural solutions to address recurring fires and the resulting smoke nuisance. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-26: Ornamibo landfill fire triggers emergency response in Suriname Firefighters are using water cannons to combat a major fire at the Ornamibo landfill in Suriname, while officials seek structural solutions to address recurring blazes and smoke nuisance. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ornamibo-landfill-fire-triggers-emergency-response-in-suriname ### 2026-10-04: Buku Deru-Deru landfill fire in Ternate requires emergency water deployment A large fire at the Buku Deru-Deru landfill in Ternate, Indonesia, has been met with emergency water supplies from the Ministry of Public Works as strong winds and dry waste hinder containment. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/buku-deru-deru-landfill-fire-in-ternate-requires-emergency-water-deployment --- Cite as: Landfill fires in Indonesia and Suriname.
