In late September 2026, Indian security forces—comprising the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF—conducted an overnight operation in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. The mission targeted a high-profile Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander identified as Sulaiman Shah, also known as Musa or Mohammad Asif. Musa, a former Pakistan Army Special Services Group (SSG) operative, was allegedly linked to the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Following the encounter in the Dudhpathri area, subsequent reports confirmed the death of the commander, referred to as Hashim Musa. His death is noted as part of a trend dismantling LeT leadership in the region, following the deaths of other commanders such as Junaid Bhat and Yasir. In the aftermath of the operation, Pakistan held a press conference presenting an individual they claimed was Musa to suggest he had survived. However, defense experts and independent agencies utilized facial recognition technology to debunk these claims, stating the individual’s facial structure and features did not match the commander. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-03: Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Hashim Musa killed in Badgam encounter Indian security forces killed Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Hashim Musa in Badgam.
